Our Story

Union Grove Farm was founded in 2002 by Greg Bohlen, a fifth generation farmer. Greg envisioned a table grape vineyard that would serve as a green space preserve in the rapidly expanding Orange County community of North Carolina.

Over the last 10 years, we have worked with grape expert, Jeff Bloodworth, to build a new delicious, seedless muscadine grape, full of antioxidants and nutrients. Starting with three experimental acres, we honed 1,200 varietals to a few choice grapes that we are now scaling across our vineyard.

Dedicated to regenerative agriculture

Once we started to prepare the land for planting, it became clear just how much nurturing the arid soil would require to produce a fruitful vineyard. We needed to build the soil before we could grow our grapes. It was critical to our mission that we focus on regenerative agriculture - working with nature to improve the soil and not using herbicides, pesticides and chemical fertilizers. So a year and a half ago, when Union Grove Farm expanded to buy the Maple View Farm, we worked hard to rebuild and repurpose the old dairy to what is now a certified regenerative vineyard.

There is currently 20+ acres in vineyard production with a plan to scale to 70 acres in the next year, and an ultimate goal of 1,000 acres of regeneratively-grown muscadine grapes in Orange County.

Center for Regenerative Agriculture

At Union Grove Farm, we believe regenerative agriculture is the future of farming. That’s why we created the Center for Regenerative Agriculture, a unique education center and demonstration farm to provide resources and enablement to farmers and agriculture students, as well as food companies, healthcare professionals and much more. We are building a strong community and network to help successfully transition conventional farmers to regenerative agriculture.
